Côtes de Provence Rosé Tours from Aix and Marseille

18 tours from 77 to 1,250 EUR, median 245. Two Aix listings hold 61% of the reviews and the same itinerary sells at 249 and 1,250 EUR.

Two listings from one operator in Aix-en-Provence hold 61% of the 820 reviews on this page: a 99 EUR half day and a 189 EUR day trip. Everything else is a long tail of private drives, sidecars and picnics, led by a 126 EUR sidecar ride with 90 reviews and dropping quickly to single digits. The 18 Côtes de Provence rosé tours run from 77 to 1,250 EUR with a median of 245 EUR, and that median is misleading in the same way as in Burgundy: the seven shared tours sit at 135 EUR and the 11 private ones at 475. Most of them start in Aix or Marseille and work the Sainte-Victoire side of the Côtes de Provence. This page is about the product: what each kind of listing actually includes, which ones are not about rosé at all, and what a private day buys at 420 to 1,250 EUR. For the region and how it links to Nice, see the Provence page.

Not everything here is a rosé tour. The 10 hour day spends its afternoon among Luberon villages, three listings are sidecar rides, and the cheapest one, a grape-stomping afternoon at 77 EUR, takes place on a farm in the Vaucluse. They are filed here because they sell alongside Côtes de Provence estates. Read the itinerary to know which kind you are buying.

Two listings hold 61% of the reviews

The Aix operator behind the 99 EUR half day (297 reviews at 4.9) and the 189 EUR Luberon day (202 reviews at 4.9) accounts for 499 of the page's 820 reviews. A third listing from a firm with almost the same name, a 115 EUR half day from Marseille, has 5 reviews and the lowest rating on the page, 4.0. The other 16 listings share the remaining 321 reviews. In practice the evidence for this whole category is two tours, and the prices above them are mostly estimates.

The 18 listings by length and price. Eleven private dots run from 126 to 1,250 EUR; seven shared ones stay under 250. · Wine Tours Editorial, from the prices of the tours listed on this site

The scatter separates the two markets cleanly. Shared tours form a low line under 250 EUR, from a 3 hour farm afternoon to a 10 hour Luberon day. Private tours scatter: sidecars at 126 to 240 EUR, full days at 420 to 495 EUR for six to eight hours, then two days of 1,150 and 1,250 EUR from a single operator that are the outliers of the whole region. Price grows with privacy and with the operator, not with hours.

The same two estates for 99 EUR and 115 EUR

The Aix half day and the Marseille half day share their stops. Both list Mas de Cadenet in Trets and an estate at Chemin du Pavillon in Rousset, with the warning that the winery can change depending on availability. The Aix tour takes 3 hours, costs 99 EUR and has 297 reviews. The Marseille tour takes 4 hours, costs 115 EUR, starts on the Quai de Rive Neuve and has 5. Neither includes hotel pickup. The difference is the drive from Marseille to the vines, and the 16 EUR you pay for not being in Aix.

The four shared half days side by side. Price per hour is arithmetic on the listed price and length.

The cheapest per hour is the Marseille listing, which also has the thinnest evidence. The most expensive, the picnic, is the only one that feeds you. If the aim is to taste rosé at two estates and get back for dinner, the 99 EUR Aix half day is the benchmark the other three have to beat, and none of them clearly does.

Who runs the page

Nine operators supply the 18 listings, and four of them supply 11. The Aix operator behind the two big listings has 499 reviews. Provence Wine Tours has three listings (the cruise day, the Luberon day from Marseille and a private full day) with 108 reviews. A local operator has the three 495 EUR private days, and one small firm has the picnic and two expensive private days. When a category is this concentrated, the honest move is to read the itinerary of the two tours everyone books, and to treat the others as individual offers from a person rather than as a market.

The Pavillon de Vendôme with its garden pond in Aix-en-Provence

Aix, and three private days at 495 EUR

The Pavillon de Vendôme in the photo stands in its own garden in Aix, and the city is the start of three private days at 495 EUR from one local operator: a Cézanne country day around Sainte-Victoire (7.5 hours), a day that mixes Aix's street markets with two family winemakers (8 hours), and a Luberon wine and food day with vineyards, olive oil and the village of Lourmarin (8 hours). Each has 4 to 9 reviews at 5.0. They are the most specific private itineraries on the page, and a named route at a fixed price is easier to compare than the open-ended days at 450 to 475 EUR.

Picnic and pétanque: 249 EUR or 1,250 EUR

One guide sells the same itinerary twice under the same title. The 249 EUR version takes up to six guests in a Multivan for 4.5 hours, with pickup at the Cézanne statue in Aix, a visit and two tastings at an organic estate in Trets, a cooperative tasting in the hill village of Puyloubier, a game of pétanque and a picnic of saucisson, olives, goat cheese, figs and lavender honey. The 1,250 EUR version lasts five hours, picks up at your hotel, cruise ship or airport, and replaces the cooperative with a second estate at Rousset that grows unusual grape varieties. Both are limited to six people.

Do the arithmetic: 1,250 EUR is 208 EUR per head for six guests, against 249 EUR a head on the shared tour. A private vehicle with hotel pickup that costs less per person than a shared one is a rare sight, and it only works if you fill it.

The shared tour is for one or two people. The private one is for a party of six.

When the rosé opens

In the picnic itinerary the rosé comes at the end. After the tastings at the estates, the guide opens a bottle from a different winery, made with grape varieties unlike the ones you have just tried, to drink with the food. It is a neat way to show that "Côtes de Provence rosé" is a style with a range, not one taste. The appellation itself is about 88.5% rosé, which is why a rosé tour here is, more or less, a tour of the ordinary product.

The Luberon day, stop by stop

The 189 EUR Luberon day lasts 10 hours and carries 202 reviews at 4.9. It visits two Côtes de Provence estates in the Sainte-Victoire area in the morning, returns to Aix in the middle of the day for a snack, then drives north for the afternoon: Lourmarin with free time, Bonnieux as a photo stop, Roussillon and Gordes with free time again. That is four villages in an afternoon. The minibus takes up to eight, and the listing includes two tastings, the transport and a driver-guide. Hotel pickup is not included.

The 160 EUR Luberon day from Marseille runs 8 hours, has 37 reviews at 4.9, and its title puts the Luberon ahead of the wine. Expect the wine to be part of the day, not the whole of it.

Sidecars, a cruise port and a farm

Three listings sell the vehicle. The 126 EUR sidecar ride is two hours along the Cézanne road with one tasting, at 90 reviews the third most reviewed on the page. The 240 EUR half-day version lasts four hours. A private sidecar tour billed as vineyards and lavender costs 219 EUR for four hours. The wine is an add-on to a ride, which is the point.

Cruise passengers have a listing of their own. The 450 EUR private day accepts only ships' passengers, because the Marseille port is a secure area, visits two or three wineries depending on docking times, and leaves two hours free for lunch in Cassis, Lourmarin or Aix, with a return around 4 pm. The same operator also lists a 475 EUR private full day of six hours. And the 77 EUR grape-stomping afternoon at Cadenet, in the Vaucluse, offers all the red wine and rosé you care to drink with cheese and charcuterie, for up to 14 people.

Questions about Côtes de Provence rosé tours

Is every tour here about rosé?

No. The appellation makes about 88.5% rosé, so most tastings are, but the Luberon day, the sidecars and the grape stomping are as much about scenery or activity as about wine. The estate tastings also pour reds and whites.

Which is the best value for a couple?

The 99 EUR Aix half day: two estates in 3 hours, a minibus and a guide, with 297 reviews at 4.9. A private day for two costs 420 EUR or more.

Is the private picnic tour worth 1,250 EUR?

For six people, arguably: it is 208 EUR each with hotel pickup. For a couple it is 625 EUR each, and the shared version at 249 EUR is the same itinerary.

Can I visit from a cruise ship?

Yes. One 450 EUR private listing is for cruise passengers only and meets at the Marseille pier. Return times follow your ship's docking time, with at least an hour of margin before departure.

Is the Luberon part of the Côtes de Provence?

No. It is a separate area to the north. The Luberon day spends its morning at two Côtes de Provence estates near Aix and its afternoon in Lourmarin, Bonnieux, Roussillon and Gordes.

Is food included?

Food is included on two of the 18, the picnic listings. The 99 EUR half day includes none, and the Luberon day returns to Aix for a quick snack. Eat before you go unless the listing says otherwise.
