Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region, and this private one-day trip from Tbilisi goes straight to it. The day combines a guided visit to a wine museum and wineries with tastings of Georgian wines and an introduction to the ancient ways of making them. The route runs over the Gombori Pass to Tsinandali, then to Shumi, and back through the Shuamta monasteries.

  1. Georgian Holidays

    Morning pickup from your accommodation in Tbilisi.

  2. Gombori Pass

    The road to wine country crosses the Gombori Pass, 1,620 m (5,315 feet) above sea level.

  3. Tsinandali Palace

    The first stop is the 19th-century residence of the Kakheti nobleman Alexandre Chavchavadze. The winery still follows methods he brought when he revived the estate. A walk in the decorative garden comes with a glass of Tsinandali wine and the story of a royal family of Georgia.

  4. Shumi Winery

    Shumi winery is a few minutes' drive from Tsinandali. The tour covers wine-related exhibits, a history and culture department and a tasting area, where Shumi wines made by European methods are served.

  5. Shuamta Monasteries

    On the way back, the village of Shuamta has two important monuments of Kakheti, the Old and New Shuamta monasteries, both in a forest of deciduous trees. In the evening, return to your accommodation in Tbilisi.
