A private day in Champagne centered on Veuve Clicquot, a boutique producer and the city of Reims. The day opens at Veuve Clicquot, where the story of Madame Clicquot is told inside 2000-year-old Roman mines, followed by a tasting. Next come the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims and a city tour of Reims, home of Mümm, Taittinger and more. The guide suggests restaurants around Reims for lunch, where Champagne can be paired with food. In the afternoon the route leaves for the countryside, through villages ringed by vineyards, to a small Champagne producer. There the making of Champagne is explained and 3 glasses are poured. The guide is certified, a sommelier student, and has 7 years of experience guiding in Champagne.

  1. Cr de la Gare, Reims

The guide waits outside the small Reims Centre train station, with your name on a phone screen.

  2. Veuve Clicquot

Cellar tour and tasting at Veuve Clicquot or another famous Champagne House, depending on your wishes and availability. An in-house guide leads the way through historic cellars in 2000-year-old Roman chalk pit mines, UNESCO listed since 2015. The visit ends with a tasting and the boutique. Barbe-Nicole, the Widow Clicquot, became the region's first successful businesswoman through a series of innovations in the first half of the 1800s. The House is now part of LVMH.

  3. Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims

Visit to Notre-Dame of Reims with a certified French National Monument guide. This 13th-century Catholic church is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with thousands of sculptures and stained-glass windows. In 496, Clovis, the first king of France, was baptised on this site by Saint-Remi, bishop of Reims. More than 30 kings of France were later crowned in the same place.

  4. Reims

Sightseeing drive through Reims, the largest city in Champagne, past its main squares, Roman ruins, medieval monuments and Champagne Houses. Stops on the route include the widest Roman arch in the world, the Louis XV square, the covered market and the Surrender Museum, where the Nazis signed. Houses passed include Roederer, Krug, Mümm, Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger and Pommery. Reims was heavily bombed in WW1 and rebuilt in the 1920s, which made it the Art Déco capital of France.

  5. Champagne Route (Route Touristique du Champagne)

A drive through the vineyards around Reims, with stops for photos and explanations. Church belltowers in medieval villages stand against forests and vines.

  6. Rilly-la-Montagne

Cellar tour and tasting at a small Champagne producer. Thousands of small producers work in the villages, and some make good wines at a fair price. The visit covers a selected one: its process, machines and cellar, then a tasting of part of the range.
