Private Kakheti Wine Day Trip from Tbilisi: Sighnaghi, Kvareli Cave and Lunch
This private day out from Tbilisi runs through Kakheti, the largest region in Georgia and the center of its winemaking. The route links family cellars and a wine cave with stops in Sighnaghi and Kvareli, with lunch and tastings along the way. Georgian wine is made in clay vessels, and the area grows hundreds of grape varieties. You hear how the clay method works at the wineries where it is used. Georgian hosts are known for long toasts, so expect several wines and a table that treats you like a guest of the family. The day covers about ten hours with a private vehicle and air conditioning. Bottled water and lunch are included, and so are all fees, taxes and the fuel surcharge.

Badiauri
The road to Sighnaghi passes through a village where you try Georgian bread and cheese.
Sighnaghi
A short drive on, Sighnaghi, known locally as the city of love, is home to Okro's Wines, a boutique winery founded in 2004. It makes natural wine from Eastern Georgian grape varieties using traditional methods, and the grapes are harvested organically without chemical additives. The 5.5-hectare estate grows six varieties: Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Saperavi, Budeshuri, Tsolikouri and Tavkveri. A restaurant serves Georgian cuisine on site. Okro's Wines belongs to the Natural Wine Association. The tasting here covers 3 wines and chacha, the Georgian grape spirit.
Vakho Oqruashvili wine cellar
The Vakho Oqruashvili wine cellar is a place to slow down after a busy day, with Georgian home cooking and home-made wine. Vakho hosts guests in person.
Tunnel Winery Khareba's
The Kvareli Wine Cave sits at the edge of the Alazani Valley and draws Georgian and foreign visitors. It was carved into the Caucasus rock and opened in 1962 for the World Congress of Vine and Wine. The temperature stays between 12 and 16 °C all year, which suits storing and aging wine. Bottles lie horizontal or upright so the cork stays wet while the wine ages. The wine tunnel is 7.7 km long, made up of two main tunnels and 13 connecting ones. One of the two entrances is used for tourism, the others for looking after wines kept in metal and oak containers. The tasting here is 2 wines.
