Private Kakheti Tour: Manavi Fortress, Vellino Family Cellar and Home-Cooked Lunch
Kakheti is the most important wine region of Georgia, and this private tour spends the day on its small producers: a family cellar, a village bakery and a local family's table. The day starts with an hour's drive from Tbilisi through villages, vineyards and valleys to Manavi fortress, a good place to learn about Georgian viticulture. A young winemaker then shows his vineyard and cellar at Vellino, and three wines are poured with chacha and local snacks. In a village, bread comes out of a clay oven and can be baked by hand, with sheep and cow cheese. Sighnaghi and its city walls are next, then a home-cooked lunch at a local family's house. Bodbe Convent closes the day, and the driver-guide takes guests back to their hotel.

Manavi
The route heads east, into a region with a lot to see. After an hour through Kakhetian villages, vineyards, valleys and mountains, the first stop is Manavi fortress, above the vineyards and the fertile valleys. It is a good place to start on the history of Georgian viticulture.
Vellino Wine Cellar
A family-run cellar, where a young winemaker welcomes guests and shares a craft handed down through generations. He guides the way through his vineyard and wine cellar and explains Georgia's ancient winemaking traditions, then leads into an ancestral cellar where wine is made by old Georgian techniques. Three wines are tasted. A shot of chacha follows, and local snacks go with each sip.
Badiauri
A village where traditions are still practiced. Bread comes out of a clay oven, and visitors can watch the craft or take part. Warm bread is then eaten with locally made sheep and cow cheese.
Sighnaghi
Sighnaghi is a fortified town known as the City of Love. Its 18th- and 19th-century architecture has a touch of Tuscan charm, and it is the most picturesque town in Kakheti. Balconies, cobblestone streets and restored facades set the tone. The old city walls can be climbed, with panoramic views of the Alazani Valley.
Kardenakhi
The culinary highlight is a local family's home and a home-cooked feast. The meal shows Kakhetian cuisine made with fresh local ingredients, with hearty food and fine wine.
Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino
The last stop is Bodbe Convent, on a hillside above the Alazani Valley and the resting place of St. Nino, the evangelizer of Georgia. Gardens and old cypress trees surround it, and the place is quiet.
Tbilisi
The driver-guide escorts guests back to their hotel.
