Montserrat Full Day by Cogwheel Train with Monks' Liquor Tasting and Bages Castle Winery
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
BarcelonaA full day that pairs the mountain and its monastery with a Catalan lunch at a winery. The group leaves Barcelona for Montserrat, a National Park and a pilgrimage site for over a thousand years, and rides the cogwheel train (cremallera) up to the monastery. At the top a guide leads a 45-minute tour of the Benedictine monastery, founded in the 11th century. It houses the Black Virgin (La Moreneta), patroness of Catalonia. The visit ends with a tasting of liquors made by the monks: ratafía and Aromes de Montserrat. The second half of the day is at a historic Catalan castle-winery with views over its vineyards. Lunch is a traditional Catalan tapas spread with dessert. A guide then walks the vineyards and the old estate, and the group tastes three signature DO Pla de Bages wines from a producer committed to sustainable production.

Montserrat
A monastery on an unusual rock mountain, the highest point of the Catalan lowlands and a National Park since 1987. Legend says the monks could not move the statue of La Moreneta, so they built around it. Small-group guided tour of 45 minutes, then 2 hours free: the Museum, the monastery's liquor, an easy walk to Saint Miguel's cross, the Sant Joan Funicular or the farmers' market.
Abadia De Montserrat
The monastery's origin is uncertain, but La Moreneta is thought to have been found around 880. The 8.30 am and 1.30 pm tours include tickets to see her. Over 70 monks still live here. The basilica dates from the 16th century and now houses an art museum. La Escolania, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, sings at religious ceremonies and can be heard on the 9.30 am tour.
Bages
Transport from Montserrat to a 12th century farmhouse on a family-owned winery in the Bages region, where a traditional Catalan tapas lunch is served.
