Half-Day Saint-Jeannet Family Vineyard Tasting and Saint-Paul-de-Vence Visit from Nice (5/5)

The vines on the hills of Saint-Jeannet date back 2,000 years, to the Romans who brought them here. This half-day trip from Nice starts in a family-owned vineyard, where the tasting covers Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Gamay. The winemaker explains old methods of making wine, including one unusual process: ageing wine under the sun. The tasting is relaxed and shared, and it comes before the second half of the trip. That second half is Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a medieval village known as the "Jewel of Provence". Artists and celebrities have long favoured it, and its cobbled streets are made for walking. 1. St-Paul-de-Vence

France's second-most visited village, a medieval cité with a name among artists. Picasso, Renoir, Folon and Chagall all walked its passageways. Look for their traces in the galleries, or follow the old ramparts.

  2. Vignoble Rasse

Below the rock that overlooks medieval St-Jeannet, a vineyard ages its wine in the sun, an unusual but traditional method. The host explains the fermentation and the history of rosé, a wine that began in this part of Provence, and pours the tasting.
