Suider Paarl
The tour leaves Cape Town after hotel pickup and heads for Stellenbosch, less than an hour's drive away. The region north of the town is known for Paarl wines and for its scenery. Paarl means 'pearl': early Dutch settlers called the granite mountains 'den Diamont ende Peerlbergh' ('the diamond and pearl mountain') because they glisten in the distance.
Suider Paarl
The first vineyard has a tasting room built from four barrel-shaped pods, each with dedicated hosts. The tasting list has 6 wines, including some sold only at the cellar door. Options are wines paired with cow and goat's milk cheeses, a plant-based cheese and wine pairing (vegan friendly), or a kids' tasting of 5 sweeter cheeses, 1 sweet treat and a glass of EGA or lemonade. After the tasting, guests learn about South African wine culture and visit the cellar.
Stellenbosch
A 15-minute drive leads to the second vineyard, where the wines are French in style with a South African touch, made naturally with minimal intervention. The pairing is five wines with premium cuts of biltong, a cured dry meat that South Africans often eat as a snack. A vegetarian alternative pairs wine with chocolates. Guests who want lunch (afternoon tour only) should tell the guide at the start so the vineyard can prepare.
Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch sits among the Stellenbosch Mountains in the Jonkershoek River Valley. It is the second oldest town in South Africa, nicknamed 'Eikestad' or city of oaks, and its streets hold Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings. Guests have time to walk Dorp Street and De Braak Street and browse the boutique stores. The tour then returns to Cape Town and drops guests at their hotel.
The Diamond Works
The optional visit opens with a glass of South African sparkling wine at The Diamond Works. Guides explain diamond cutting and polishing and tell the story of Tanzanite, 1,000 times rarer than diamonds and found only at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The complimentary visit includes polishing demonstrations, a virtual reality trip through the Kimberley Mine, an augmented reality look at Elizabeth Taylor's jewels and sessions on diamond grading. Tell the operator after booking if you want to join.
