Groot Drakenstein Prison
Photo stop at Drakenstein Prison, formerly Victor Verster. Mandela was moved from Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison in Tokai in 1982, then to Victor Verster on 9 December 1988, where he lived in a private house inside the compound. The farm prison was often a stepping stone for releasing lower-risk political prisoners. He served another 14 months there before his release on 11 February 1990, when reporters from around the world gathered outside and gave the prison worldwide publicity.
