Amarante
Morning pick-up at your hotel in Porto, then the drive to Amarante. The stop covers the old bridge and São Gonçalo Church, a symbol of local identity built in the 13th century by the town's patron saint, the Benedictine monk São Gonçalo. Amarante's sweets and cakes are famous, and they are tasted at a well-known cake shop.
Vila Real
Next is Mateus Palace in Vila Real, set in gardens on a large farm and regarded as one of the finest examples of baroque civil architecture in Portugal. A certified guide tells the story of the palace. The visit ends with a walk and photos in the gardens.
Favaios
Lunch in the wine region of Favaios is the highlight of the day. An aperitif is served first in the estate gardens. The all-inclusive lunch has tasting starters (alheira, pataniscas, rojões), Sopa de Pedra (stone soup) in an iron pot, veal stew or roast, and a fruit and dessert buffet. White and red Douro wines are poured, with Favaios Muscat and Port. After lunch, the estate wine cellars.
Pinhao
The road runs downhill from Favaios to Pinhão, on the right bank of the Douro. In Pinhão: the train station with its early 20th-century azulejo panels, then a one-hour cruise on a typical Rabelo boat. The boat goes upstream toward the Romaneira estate, past wine farmhouses and terraces that reach the river, a stretch of vineyards in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The return to Porto follows the N222 from Pinhão to Peso da Régua, considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world: 17 miles and 93 gentle bends. The day ends with transport back to your Porto hotel.
