Small-Group Barolo Day Trip from Milan: Alba, Grinzane Cavour Castle and Family Winery
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
MilanBarolo has been called the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings. This small-group day from Milan goes to where it is made, in the Langhe hills, a UNESCO World Heritage wine area, with an English-speaking guide. The first stop is Alba, capital of the white truffle and birthplace of Nutella. There are 2 hours of free time to walk the historic center and have lunch. The group then drives into the Barolo region to a family-run winery with wide views over the Langhe. Guests step into the traditional cellar, meet the producers and taste 7 wines, Barolo among them, while hearing how the local vineyards and winemaking traditions work. Grinzane Cavour Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site ringed by vineyards and one of the Langhe's well-known viewpoints, is also on the route. On Tuesdays the castle is closed, and the stop is swapped for a panoramic viewpoint in La Morra or Barbaresco.

Alba
Alba is known for its historic old town, its food and the White Truffle Fair, held on weekends in October and November. The medieval towers and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo are the main sights. Local shops sell hazelnut cream, and small traditional restaurants serve Piedmont dishes such as fresh egg pasta and veal with tuna sauce.
Barolo
A family-run winery surrounded by vineyards. In the cellars the winemakers explain how Barolo is made: only from Nebbiolo grapes, under strict rules on vineyard location, aging and classification. Each hill and vineyard has its own name and character, which shape the structure, aroma and aging potential of the wine. The guided tasting covers at least six DOC and DOCG reds, sometimes seven, Barolo included, with attention to quality, terroir and local tradition.
Castello Di Grinzane Cavour
A medieval castle on the UNESCO World Heritage list, with views over the Langhe hills and vineyards. Inside is the historic wine shop, considered the oldest in Piedmont, tied to Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. Cavour promoted modern winemaking methods and helped turn Barolo from a local product into a wine known abroad. Note: on Tuesdays the castle is closed, and the visit is replaced by a stop at a viewpoint in La Morra, known for some of the best vineyard views in the Barolo region.
