A half-day wine outing from Cape Town for travelers who want good wine, open scenery and a break from the city without giving up the whole day. The route runs through vineyards, with tastings, hosts who know their wines and stories from the estates along the way. Two estates anchor the day. Fairview pairs its wines with its own artisanal cheeses, and its farm has a history going back to the late 17th century. Marianne pairs red wine with biltong, the traditional South African cured meat.

  1. Dock Rd, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town

Wait for the driver next to the red bus station.

  2. Fairview Wine and Cheese

Fairview, in the Paarl Valley, is known for its award-winning wines and artisanal cheeses. The farm dates to the late 17th century, when it was granted to a French Huguenot settler named Charles Back. It was first called Bloemkoolfontein and later renamed Fairview for its views, and the Back family still owns it. Vineyard views and Cape Dutch architecture greet guests, and a cheese pairing matches each cheese to a wine.

  3. Marianne Wine Estate

Marianne's idea is simple: good red wine goes well with biltong, the traditional South African jerky. The tasting shows how savory local flavors bring out the character of the wines.
