Private Full-Day Winelands Tour: Fairview, Plaisir de Merle, Franschhoek Lunch and Muratie
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Cape TownA private day across the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions, with three wine farms and scenery of white gabled buildings, manor houses and mountain ranges. The day starts at Fairview, known for cheese, with a tasting of its wine alongside local produce. It continues to Franschhoek with a stop at Plaisir de Merle, where the talk is of farm-to-fork organic farming and the tasting covers the estate's best wines. Lunch is in Franschhoek, which calls itself South Africa's culinary capital. The last tasting is at Muratie, a heritage estate, before the drive back to Cape Town in late afternoon.

Fairview Wine and Cheese
The luxury minivan leaves Cape Town for the Stellenbosch wine region, where the Mediterranean climate and fertile soils produce millions of litres of wine a year. The guide then continues northwest to Paarl and Fairview, where several of the estate's white wines and cheeses are tasted. The tour is private, so the day is flexible: stay longer, stop along the way, or change the order. The suggested start is an early tasting at Fairview of wine with cheese and olive oil.
Plaisir de Merle
On the way to Franschhoek, Plaisir de Merle sits at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain. Charles Marais founded the estate in 1693. Lawns, old oak trees and valley views surround the tasting room, which is in an 1823 barn. Wines can be paired with artisanal nougat or chocolate truffles.
Franschhoek
Lunch is in Franschhoek, about 8 km (5 miles) away. The private guide points out sidewalk cafes and restaurants, and lunch is at the guest's own expense. On weekends there is a farmers' market with live music. Time is left for the history of the French Huguenots who arrived in the seventeenth century, shops on the main street and a charcuterie plate.
Muratie
Muratie is a small Stellenbosch estate loved by locals, with old cellars of ramshackle walls and worn paintings. The tasting pairs its fortified port-style sweet wine with locally made chocolate; classic white or red tastings are available for anyone who prefers to skip sweet wine. The chocolate pairing was discontinued from April 2024 and replaced by a tasting of similar value. The drive back reaches Cape Town in the early evening. The itinerary may run in a different order.
