Hahndorf
Hahndorf is Australia's oldest German settlement. Its main street has boutiques, artisan shops and cafes, and time to try a traditional German pastry.
Beerenberg Farm
Beerenberg Farm (30 minutes) is a fifth-generation family farm on the edge of Hahndorf. There is time for the farm shop and tastings of jams, chutneys and sauces. Strawberry picking runs from November to April and costs extra, paid directly to the farm. Outside those months the shop and tastings run as usual.
Melba's Chocolate & Confectionery
Melba's Chocolates in Woodside occupies an old cheese factory, now a working confectionery. Visitors can wander the production areas, watch the chocolatiers and taste handmade sweets, from chocolate-coated honeycomb to boiled lollies.
Barossa Valley
From Hahndorf the road to the Barossa Valley runs through the Adelaide Hills, past vineyards, forest and farmland. Kangaroos, koalas and birds can sometimes be seen along the way.
Kies Family Wines
Lunch and a tasting at Kies Family Wines, a family-owned estate. Lunch is at the Monkey Nut Café, with vineyard views. The complimentary tasting follows in the historic ironstone cottage cellar door, where staff guide a selection of premium wines.
Seppeltsfield Wines
The drive continues to Seppeltsfield, reached along its Avenue of Palms. The Centennial Cellar is here. Time to explore: JamFactory craft and design (10 minutes), Vasse Virgin (20 minutes) and Octeine Cafe (10 minutes).
Vasse Virgin at Seppeltsfield
Seppeltsfield is also an artisan village. Vasse Virgin sells essential oils, the JamFactory has working artisans, and Octeine Cafe serves specialty coffee. The estate has 170 years of history.
Jamfactory At Seppeltsfield
At the JamFactory, resident artisans can be watched at work. Octeine Cafe next door serves a specialty brew.
Ubertas Wines
Ubertas Wines is a boutique, family-owned Barossa winery founded by two brothers who brought their vision from Asia to Australia. The cellar door is relaxed and contemporary, and the tasting covers reds and whites, often guided by the winemakers.
