Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are three stops on what is called the longest wine route in the world, and this day tour visits all of them. The towns are known for heritage buildings, mountain ranges and wide vineyards. Many estates here have a long cultural history. Tastings pair Cape wines with cheese, and the day also covers the old towns and how the Winelands developed. On the way the group rides the open-air Franschhoek Wine Tram, detours past Drakenstein Prison, and finishes at the Spice Route in Paarl.

  1. Stellenbosch

The day starts with a 30 to 40 minute drive from Cape Town to Stellenbosch. The guide leads a walk through the old town, which also has one of the most prominent universities in Africa. The first tasting is at a premier wine estate, with a short cellar tour and the estate's best wines paired with local cheese. Bottles can be bought on the farm.

  2. Franschhoek

Franschhoek means French corner. It is an old Huguenot village and a culinary destination for food and wine lovers. After a short walk through town, the group boards the Franschhoek Wine Tram. The open-air double-decker tram runs several routes, and riders hop on and off to reach the oldest wine estates in the valley. The tram guide covers the town's history and its tropical fruit and winemaking. Guests taste a selection of the valley's wines and can buy food and drink at the stops (not included in the rate).

  3. Paarl

On the way to Paarl there is a short detour to Drakenstein Prison, formerly Victor Verster Prison. Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his 27-year sentence here and walked out a free man on 11 February 1990. A life-size statue of him stands at the prison. In Paarl, a short tour of the town comes before the Spice Route, a food and drink complex on a wine farm. It has wine merchants, coffee shops, restaurants, delis, a craft beer brewery, shops and a children's play area. Guests can taste the valley's wines or the craft beer, shop for souvenirs or walk the gardens. The group leaves Paarl in the late afternoon.
