This full-day tour covers the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek wine region by air-conditioned minivan, with wines paired with artisanal cheeses or seasonal produce. Fairview's Farmer Tasting sets fine wines against a spread of cheeses. In Franschhoek the group boards the vintage-style Franschhoek Wine Tram for a short one-way ride of 2 to 5 minutes through the vineyards to Rickety Bridge (or a similar estate) and a standard tasting of 3 wines. On the way back to Cape Town the last stop is Muratie, one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, near Stellenbosch, for port-style wines.

  1. Fairview Wine and Cheese

This tour may be outsourced to a different tour supplier. The guide meets guests at their accommodation in central Cape Town, and an air-conditioned minivan takes them through the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Winelands. The wine experts who designed the route explain flavor profiles and vintages. The first stop is Fairview Estate on the south-western slopes of the Paarl Mountain Range, for a farmer's tasting that pairs reds and whites with artisanal cheese made at the onsite cheesery.

  2. Franschhoek Wine Tram

In Franschhoek the group boards a vintage-style railway tram, with a glass of local wine, for one stop at a wine estate: Rickety Bridge or Plaisir Wine Estate, depending on the tram's daily route and availability. The ride to the estate usually takes about 5 minutes.

  3. Franschhoek

Country lanes lined with vineyards lead to the foothills of the Franschhoek Valley for a lunch stop with free time. Options include the weekend farmer's market, a deli or a roadside cafe in the old town. The town's history, including the French Huguenots who arrived in the seventeenth century, art galleries and craft shops along the main street fill the rest of the break.

  4. Rickety Bridge Wine Estate

At the estate's train platform, guests walk to the tasting room. The standard route usually stops at historic Rickety Bridge for an included estate tasting of 3 wines with valley views. When the tram heads toward the Simonsberg Mountains, it stops at Plaisir Wine Estate instead, where the included tasting is a choice of 3 wines from the estate range.

  5. Muratie

Muratie lies just north of Stellenbosch in the Knorhoek Valley and dates back to 1685. Tastings take place in old carved-out cement fermentation tanks. The first Pinot Noir in South Africa was made here, and the tasting features sweet port-style wines. The day ends with a late afternoon drop-off at your Cape Town or Stellenbosch accommodation.
