This full-day trip from Rome crosses the Chianti hills to Siena and San Gimignano. In Siena, the visit covers the heart of the city and Piazza del Campo, where the Palio, a medieval-style horse race, is run. The city is known for its wine and for sweets such as Panpepato, Panforte and Ricciarelli. San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site called "The City of the Hundred Towers", and it keeps its original features. Its name is also tied to one of Tuscany's oldest wines, La Vernaccia. The group then stops at a wine cellar for a tasting of wines and local products, with a visit to the estate and to the cellars where grapes are processed and wine is made. The tasting covers 10 different wines, and lunch is based on typical local products.

  1. Basilica Cateriniana Di S. Domenico

The Basilica of San Domenico stands on the slopes of Siena's historic center, among houses that climb toward the Duomo. It is one of the city's most important churches because of its link to Saint Catherine of Siena. It was built between 1226 and 1265 and enlarged in the fourteenth century. Fires, military occupations, earthquakes and later alterations have shaped it over the centuries. The Gothic exterior is described as Cistercian in character and has an unusual relationship between outside and inside.

  2. Duomo di Siena

The Duomo di Siena is seen from outside. It is a medieval church, Marian from its earliest days and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was built between 1214 and 1263 on a Latin cross plan, with a shallow dome and the bell tower beside it. Blocks of white marble alternate with thinner greenish-black stripes inside and out, the colors of Siena.

  3. Centro Storico di Siena - World Heritage Site

Piazza del Campo is the heart of Siena and of the UNESCO-listed historic center. Its shell shape is divided into nine sections, in memory of the Nine Lords who governed the city at the end of the thirteenth century. It was once a green space that held the market, and today it is the city's living room and the arena of the Palio, run twice a year. On 2 July and 16 August, the piazza, paved in pietra serena, is covered with a layer of tuff and sand, and the horses of the districts race across it.

  4. Historic Centre of San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, called "The City of the Hundred Towers" and still full of its original features. Its name is linked to one of Tuscany's oldest wines, La Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The stop covers the medieval streets and the old center.

  5. Tenuta Torciano

Tenuta Torciano is an estate near San Gimignano, halfway between Siena and Florence, with 13 generations of winemakers behind it. Ancient cultivation methods meet modern technology here. The visit includes the estate and a tasting of 10 wines and oils with local products in the wine cellar.
