Until the end of the 20th century, Priorat was one of the most isolated rural areas in Catalonia. Today DOQ Priorat is one of only two Spanish appellations at the highest rank, which is what the Q for Quality stands for. This private tour from Barcelona goes there as a wine expedition.

  1. Barcelona to DOQ Priorat

The trip from Barcelona to DOQ Priorat feels like a wine expedition. Reality is left behind for a place that seems cut off from time, a parallel world full of wine.

  2. Priorat landscape

Priorat is hilly Mediterranean slopes, winding roads paved only recently, and small, forsaken villages surrounded by vineyards and full of cellars. A group of winemakers with a vision in the late 1980s, and the hard work of many people, turned it into a source of some of the world's most prestigious wines. The formula is very old vines, tiny yields, harsh dry weather and an almost religious winemaking culture. What was an economically deprived area that grew grapes in bulk is now a wine sanctuary. Yields are so low that producers often bottle a single vineyard, and each one tastes different from the next.
