This private winelands tour leaves the pace flexible. It heads to Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and the center of the country's wine region, and adds stops in Paarl and Franschhoek for tastings with mountain ranges in the background. The highlight is a ride on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which runs past vines and valleys.

  1. Cape Town Central

The road east from Cape Town passes through Langa, the oldest township in South Africa, founded in 1823. It is well developed, and its economy now includes ceramics, traditional South African bistros and film work. The movie Safe House with Denzel Washington was shot here. Delaire Graff Estate on Helshoogte Rd, the first wine stop, is a 50 to 60 minute drive away.

  2. Groot Drakenstein Prison

Nelson Mandela spent his last 14 months in prison here at Drakenstein Prison, formerly Victor Verster. He called it a gilded cage: he had comfortable quarters instead of a cell, with several bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef and views of the Drakenstein Mountains. He was released in February 1990.

  3. Franschhoek

Franschhoek means French Corner, and it is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, with old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. The town is known for food and wine. At the end of the main road stands the Huguenot Monument, for the French settlers. Lunch here lasts 1 hour before the last wine estate.

  4. Haute Cabrière

Haute Cabriere is the home of Pierre Jourdan. The tasting covers award-winning Cap Classique sparkling wines, including limited-release and vintage bottles such as Brut Reserve, Brut Rose and Belle Rose, made by the traditional Champagne method. The cellar master shares winemaking knowledge, and the tasting room looks over the Franschhoek Valley.

  5. Delaire Graff Estate

Delaire Graff Estate serves a tasting of award-winning, limited-release wines guided by sommeliers, with a focus on Bordeaux-style blends: Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and red blends. The tasting explains the terroir and winemaking of Stellenbosch. Gourmet bites from the estate restaurant are paired with the wines, and its private art collection is open to visit.

  6. Tokara Wine Estate

A modern hilltop winery with vineyard views, tastings and an art gallery, plus a chic restaurant.

  7. Fairview Wine and Cheese

Fairview matches its goat cheeses with its wines, comparing texture, flavor and acidity. Each wine and cheese pairing is built to show a new side of both.

  8. Cape Town Central

The drive back to Cape Town.
