Private Half-Day Champagne Tour from Épernay: Hautvillers, Côte des Blancs, 2 Growers (12/12)

This private half-day starts in Épernay, the capital of the Champagne vineyards, and covers two very different corners of the region: the UNESCO-listed hillsides around Hautvillers and the Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs. Hautvillers is called the Cradle of Champagne. Here the guide leads a tour of Dom Pérignon's church and the vineyard, then stops at a viewpoint in the vines and explains how the vineyard is managed. Two families of independent growers are visited. Each visit covers production, and each ends with a commented tasting, six Grand Cru and Premier Cru champagnes in all, plus other Champagne spirits and aperitifs in additional tastings. Between the two, the route runs through the Côte des Blancs, known for Grand Cru Chardonnay and 100% Blanc de Blancs. The tour closes with a commented drive along the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, nicknamed the most expensive avenue in the world, with 200 million bottles in its cellars.

  1. Abbaye Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers

Hautvillers is known as the Cradle of Champagne. A private tour of the church covers the grave of Dom Pérignon, called the spiritual father of Champagne, and the guide tells his story, including whether he really invented champagne.

  2. Hautvillers

Also in Hautvillers, a stop on the historic Champagne hillsides (UNESCO World Heritage) gives the widest view over the Marne Valley, where Dom Pérignon carried out his winemaking experiments. It is a good spot for photos. The first of the two independent grower families is visited next: presses, winery and cellars, with the champagne-making process explained. A commented tasting follows, 3 different Grand Cru or Premier Cru champagnes*. *Depending on season and availability, this visit may take place in a Côte des Blancs village or in Aÿ-Champagne.

  3. Cramant

On the Côte des Blancs, the route goes through Cramant, a Grand Cru village south of Épernay in an area called the Kingdom of Chardonnay Grand Cru. It also passes Chouilly and Avize, the largest champagne bottle factory, the Château de Saran (the private estate where the LVMH group, owner of Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart and Krug, receives top clients) and the Montaigu site, where Moët & Chandon makes its champagne.

  4. Oger

Oger is another Grand Cru village on the Côte des Blancs, known for Blanc de Blancs, 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru. The second independent family is visited here, with presses, winery and cellars. The tasting is 3 champagnes, all 100% Grand Cru, with advice on telling apart the styles of Blanc de Blancs: non-dosed natural, extra brut, old vines, vintage or aged in oak barrels.

  5. Avenue de Champagne

In Épernay the route crosses the Avenue de Champagne, part of the UNESCO-listed Champagne sites. It is considered the most expensive avenue in the world, with its Champagne houses, mansions and 100 kilometers of cellars holding 200 million bottles. A commentary covers the history of the mansions and production buildings that have belonged for centuries to houses such as Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët and Pol Roger.
