Two family-run estates in Chianti, ten wines in total, and a coach from Florence that handles the driving. The first vineyard pours four wines with a traditional Tuscan lunch that includes handmade pasta and local specialties. The second, a hilltop estate, pours six more and adds olive oil and balsamic vinegar to taste. Groups are small and the guides are experts, so the pace stays relaxed. Transport is round trip from Florence.

  1. Piazzale Montelungo, Firenze

Arrive 15 minutes early to check in. From Santa Maria Novella train station, follow the signs to Piazzale Montelungo (bus terminal area), next to the Piccolo Ristoro kiosk. Look for staff in red holding a bright red sign.

  2. Meeting in central Florence

Meet the English-speaking guide in central Florence and board the coach. The sommelier briefly introduces the two family-run estates and what to expect from each tasting.

  3. Fontaleoni

The guide points out medieval towers and century-old estates along the road through Chianti. About an hour after departure the coach reaches Fontaleoni, a family-run winery founded in 1959. A sommelier leads the way into the cellar and tells how the estate moved from mixed farming to making Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Chianti. Lunch is traditional Tuscan with four estate wines: appetizers, handmade pasta with tomato sauce, and cantucci dipped in sweet Vin Santo.

  4. Poggio ai Laghi

After lunch, a 30-minute drive leads to Poggio ai Laghi, a winery on the plateau between two lakes. The microclimate suits Sangiovese, Merlot and Vermentino. The second sommelier-led tasting pours six selected wines, served with the estate's olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar, cured meats and bruschetta.

  5. Scenic return drive to Florence

A scenic 50-minute return drive through the Chianti countryside ends in central Florence. The guide has wine shop and aperitivo suggestions before guests leave.

  6. Piazzale Montelungo, Firenze
